The Myths of Online Learning
Myth #1: I can go through an online class at my own pace.
Although they provide flexibility that face to face classes do not, online courses are NOT completed at your own speed. Online students are expected to engage regularly throughout the academic quarter at a pace set by the instructor. While online learning can be convenient for those with jobs and families, it takes the same amount of work as a face-to-face class, if not more.
Myth #2: Online classes are easier.
Online classes are structured much like face-to-face classes, with readings, discussions, and assignments with due dates. Online classes also require students to be organized, punctual and disciplined. Online students must log in to their courses several times per week, and may be required to participate in live sessions if the teacher requests it.
Myth #3: Online classes don't require me to talk to people.
Online classes involve interacting with your instructor and classmates. Talking with each other and solving problems together is a key aspect of succeeding in an online class.
