Check dates so you know when your classes open and instruction starts.
Read the syllabus on your first visit to the course and print it out or add due dates to your electronic calendar! Make note of dates when quizzes and exams are scheduled and projects are due.
Log on to the classroom site the day it opens and explore all of the links and options. Become familiar with where your instructor puts documents and assignments. See if there is a pre-class assignment and complete it.
Log on to your course every day. Treat online classes just like in-person classes by having a set time each day that you “attend class”. There will likely be continuous activity on the discussion boards and important updates and reminders if not more.
Use the Canvas calendar to stay organized! Using the calendar will help you avoid missing assignments or turning them in late.
Read EVERYTHING the instructor has posted, and read it before attempting to do an assignment!
Don’t miss deadlines - online classes are still classes and there will be deadlines for assignments and tests.
Read directions for tests carefully. When do you have access to the test? How many attempts do you get? Once you start a test you can’t go back if you can only do it one time so be sure you have time to complete it before you start.
Don't just check your grades! When an assignment is graded, look for comments on your assignments! Many instructors submit comments on your work to help you improve.
Contact your instructor right away, via email, phone or in person, if you are having problems.
Participate! Contribute your ideas and comments and read those of other students.
Make sure you have a quiet space where you can study.
Prepare for the what ifs: what if my power goes off, what if my computer crashes, what if I can’t access the test during the timeframe allowed, etc. Ask other students for ideas on how they would prepare for these situations
